This is a great book. It was one of those very rare books that really has significantly changed my thinking.It took me a while to read this book, because I was fundamentally against the approach. Or so I thought. I have always been against so called “quantitative methods†because to me they represented a shallow approach where fancy formulas and numerical analyses that look impressive and provide beautiful graphs, obscure the fact that fundamentally they are based on an arbitrary assignment of numerical values to various concepts.It turns out that what I considered quantitative methods are called “scoring methods†in this book.I work in IT and have been solely exposed to the scoring methods that are described in the book. I always thought that these are very silly and infantile, but I still though that they were better than nothing. I was wrong. As very thoroughly explained in the book these methods are not only silly, they are harmful. They are worse than flipping a coin. So, if you are using the “risk management†concepts and approach from Cobit, PMBOK or Prince2 read this book. It will make you cry and laugh, but you will have learned a very important lesson. Why scoring methods are considered harmful and that there is a better way to do risk management.
