Ich liebe Gayle Formans Bücher. Nach „If I stay“ war ich absolut angefixt. In ihren Romanen verspüre ich immer eine Melancholie. Das Leben ist für ihre Protagonisten kein Zuckerschlecken und doch schaffen sie es an ihren Herausforderungen zu wachsen, sich zu entwickeln und voran zu kommen. Cody ist auch so ein Charakter. Ihre Mutter ist nicht der mütterliche Typ. Die häusliche Wärme holt sie sich als Kind bei Megs Familie. Auf den ersten Blick, ein Vorstadtidyll. Eine Mutter die gern bäckt, ein verständnisvoller Vater, zwei Kinder und ein Hund. Aber auch dort hängt der Himmel nicht voller Geigen. Vielmehr bemerkt man im Subtext, dass Megs Mutter an Depressionen leidet, die sie mit Backen kompensiert. Offensichtlich muss sie dies an Meghan vererbt haben. Der Clou ist, dass man Meg zunächst durch Codys Augen kennenlernt. Ein verrücktes Mädchen, dass nicht immer hineinpasst, die aber dennoch mit ihren verrückten Ideen andere für sich gewinnen kann. Erst durch Codys Reise wird dieses Bild gewandelt. In eine verzweifelte Jugendliche, die die Welt überfordernd findet, die keinen Halt zu haben scheint und die es so ernst meint, dass sie sich Hilfe zum Selbstmord aus Internetforen holt. Und an der Stelle begann ich mich zu fragen, wie gut kann man einen anderen überhaupt kennen? Cody erfährt auf der Suche nach den Helfern im Hintergrund, viel über sich selbst. Auch sie hat Selbstmordgedanken, doch ihr Lebenswille ist immer stärker. Mein persönliches Bonbon an der Story, war die aufkeimende Liebe zu dem Musiker Ben. Ben ist ein eher unkonventioneller Charakter und – was ihn besonders anziehend für mich macht- ein reizender Katzenretter. Er steht Cody zur Seite, bei allem was sie tut, auch wenn er nicht immer damit einverstanden ist und er gibt auch nicht auf, als sie ihn von sich stößt. Ich konnte zwischen den Zeilen, den Wachstumsschmerz der beiden fühlen.Möglicherweise reicht „I was here“ nicht an die anderen Geschichten, was die Melancholie und Tiefgang angeht, heran. Ich fand es dennoch sehr gefühlvoll und anrührend und hoffe sie schreibt noch viele solcher Storys.
'I was here' is a beautifully written book by Gayle Forman (If I Stay, Where She Went) about young Cody struggling with her best friend Meg's suicide she doesn't understand. Trying to find reasons for her friend's sudden death, she discovers parts of Megan's life she never knew about and wonders if she ever actually knew her best friend who managed to keep so many secrets from her. Furthermore, Cody finds herself drowning in guilt because she never knew about Meg being suicidal and left her alone during her last months after Meg had left for college in another city. But that's not what makes this book so beautiful.'I was here' (yes, there is a reason for the name) manages to perfectly picture what it's like when a loved one ends the own life and all the guilt, grief and pain you need to go through. You find yourself trapped between wondering what could've been and what you might've missed that could have saved the person, trying to blame someone or something for it and finally, the struggle to move on with the own life after such an important part of it has been taken away from you. It actually surprised me to find out the author never actually went through this kind of situation herself because she describes it so authentically.What I love most about this book is the way Cody desperately tries to find someone to blame for it so she doesn't have to blame herself anymore and how she realizes that there is no one to blame in the end. That mental disorders can be kept a secret for years until it's too late.The only thing I don't like is that the love story kind of distracts the reader from the actual story (the love story is cute, though), but nothing's ever perfect, right? And besides that and that it only contains 270 pages, 'I was here' is truly amazing for people in similar situations as well as those who've fortunately never had to experience this kind of loss.
Im Vordergrund steht das schwierige Thema Selbstmord.Damit wird die junge Protagonistin Cody konfroniert, als sich ihre beste Freundin Meg mit Gift selbst tötet.Cody setzt alles daran, heraus zu finden, warum ihre beste Freundin sich zu diesem Schritt genötigt sah, da Meg in Codys Augen, niemals gefährdet oder in irgendeiner Art und Weise depressiv auffällig gewesen sei.Und mit dem Lösen dieses Geheimnisses beginnt eine Reise, auf der Cody sich nicht nur sich selbst und ihrer Vergangenheit - der schlechten Beziehung zur Mutter und dem nicht vorhandenen Kontakt zum Vater - stellen muss, sondern auch gesellschaftlichen und sozialen Zwängen, einer dubiosen Online-Support-Gruppe und nicht zuletzt auch einer unerwarteten Liebe, die sie vielleicht mehr braucht, als das Lüften des Mysteriums um den Tod von Meg.- Auch wenn die Handlung etwas vorhersehbar ist und der richtig spannende Höhepunkt ausbleibt, oder maximal etwas lahm daherkommt, handelt es sich hier um einen wundervoll geschriebenen Jugendroman, mit einer unkonventionellen "Liebesgeschichte", die so rein, wie aber auch heftig ist und das Herz beim Lesen wild pochen lässt.Besonders bemerkenswert finde ich, dass der Leser in dem Buch vermeindlich einen Bösewicht sucht, am Ende aber einfach damit zurechtkommen muss, dass der Mensch eben nur ein Mensch ist, mit Schwächen. Und das man auch den besten Freund nicht immer zu 100% kennen kann und auch nicht immer alles verstehen muss, was er tut. Wichtig ist nur, dass man die Erinnerungen wertschätzt und in sich verwahrt... so werden wir Menschen unendlich.
